How To Wear White in Fall & Winter

If you are wondering how you can still get away with wearing white even when the weather and everyone around you says that you should not, then check the full post. As long as I can remember, I have always loved wearing white in cooler months.

As the weather gets gloomy, wearing the brightest color lifts your mood and specially enhances your winter outfit. And naturally all your garment in white always look expensive than they are, don’t you think?

This is the biggest reason, I love wearing white specially in fall and winter. And in this post I am sharing different ways you can spring white in your outfits this fall and winter to look really chic and stylish.

But first let’s debunk the biggest myth about wearing white in fall and winter.

Can You Wear White After Labor Day?

I am not really sure why would or should there be such a fashion rule which absolutely does not make sense. But if you look at clothing, when you associate them with fall and winter months which are cooler, darker time of season, it is natural to associate with darker tones of garment.

And probably that was the biggest reason, you typically don’t see a lot of clothes in white or fashion magazines displaying models in white.

But with time, fashion has also changed its mindset about wearing white for cold weather. In fact, I have seen an increasing number of items from different brands displaying winter white pieces that looks so refreshing compared to black or other darker colored clothes.

So, you can definitely wear white after Labor Day in fact whenever you want to.

But, lets see how to easily rock white in winter without feeling like you are still in summer.

Investing in Cold Weather White Essentials

Like any other season, investing in cold weather essentials in white will naturally make it really easy for you to incorporate white in your everyday outfits. This way you don’t have to put in an effort of thinking how you can wear white which can be challenging if you don’t have a lot of time or you naturally have white pieces that are only for summer pieces.

Moreover, because you have the winter pieces in white, it also looks more in season and enhances your winter outfit that you are creating in the color.

And you don’t really need a lot of winter white pieces and definitely not need to buy them all at once. When I started on this journey of incorporating white into my winter styling, I slowly started to pay attention to what I wanted to add to my closet that I can keep on wearing for years.

This means of course, look for items that are good quality, because white in general is a color where all imperfections will show. So, quality pieces in white will always look better than other colors or even black.

And these are really simple fall and winter white pieces that you can add to your wardrobe.

A good quality white crewneck sweater can be worn with any kind of bottoms starting from skirts, pants and jeans. You can wear this versatile piece with so many different colors and garments and it will effortlessly add white to your outfit.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a good sweater. Its important to pay attention to weave. You should buy one which is close knit, so its not see through which can make it look cheap.

The one I am sharing is from Banana Republic Factory and is under $50.

As it gets cooler, you can also invest in a good white turtleneck sweater which you can wear by itself or you can wear them as a layering base that will look chic and stylish.

I love wearing turtlenecks because they just instantly create a sophisticated look. And moreover, your neck looks long. I love how it makes me look leaner even if I am wearing white.

This is the most versatile piece of outerwear you will ever own. Because a white coat can be worn with any colored outfit. You can even wear it with black and still create a monochromatic and cool winter outfit that looks effortlessly chic.

And if you pick a wool blend and not completely woolen, you can also wear it for fall when the weather is not so coat for a long coat.

I always find that a good structured white coat should be in every woman’s closet.

And this double breasted white coat is from my favorite store Mango and is currently on sale as well.

You can wear it on top of dresses or even jeans and create a structured and sophisticated look for fall and winter.

You can still wear your summer clothes, but with a white wool blend coat you can easily create a fall look that looks effortless.

And in winter you can wear it with sweaters and boots. Matching your coat with boots is an easy way to create cohesive looks for winter.

A pair of good and relaxed fit white jeans are a must winter white essentials. You might already own these, if so, you can continue to wear it all year and not just for summer.

I love a good wide leg jeans or pants for fall and winter because you can wear boots with them easily as well as fitted sweaters and tops as well.

And if you have a straight figure you know that wearing chunky sweaters can get challenging for you in winter. But with wide leg jeans you can easily wear them and look flattering with them.

I like a good raw hem jeans for fall and winter which adds a bit of edginess to my outfit that balances out all of the structured pieces that I wear.

Wide Leg jeans can look really flattering in the cold weather. We usually wear legging or skinny jeans because we want to wear tall boots with them, but you know that you can easily wear boots with wide leg jeans.

In fact you can wear tall boots without have a lump around the ankle. And if you wear pointy toe boots your legs look way longer.

You probably already knew that I was going to come to this, but yes white boots are the easiest way you can add some brightness to your winter outfits.

And they actually look way more expensive than they are because of the color. These boots are from Marc Fisher and easily look luxurious because of the pointy toes and grained leather finish.

If you are just starting out with white boots, I recommend going for a Chelsea boot which is the most versatile pair of boots. Check out how you can style them and other styles of white ankle boots in my previous post.

You can dress up the blazer by wearing it with skirts or dresses that adds a modern touch to the look as well. Blazers have become an essential that you need in your closet and with a white wool one, you can easily create business casual work looks as well as fancy going out looks.

And you can also wear them in spring when the weather is not warmed up completely.

How to Style White Pieces

I wanted to share some styling tips on how you can easily style these white essentials or any white piece for fall and winter.

These tips are perfect for everyday as well as special occasion wear as well.

Wear Monochrome

My Favorite way looking stylish and effortlessly doing it is by creating Monochromatic outfits for fall. I have created an entire bloc post where I am sharing how you can create monochromatic colorful outfits as well as white outfits for fall and winter.

If you are creating an all white look, its important to use different textures that will help you create dimension in your outfit.

Mix with Prints

Adding some prints to white pieces will not feel over powering as well as it will balance the plain look of the outfit as well.

This is also a great way to wear prints in any weather actually, but in winter it feels difficult to do that because we mostly prefer sweaters or knits that always come in solid colors.

But you can wear your summer or sprints with winter pieces like a wool coat or boots and get more wear out of your summer closet as well.

Wear Stripes

And when in doubt always add something striped. Usually you will find white sweaters and tops that have stripes and this is a great way to add some texture to your white outfit.

You can also do this if you are wearing all white. Stripes are a great pattern for winter that looks sophisticated and elevates your outfit.

And they break the monotony of solid colors as well. And I have shared an easy look that you can put together and wear as a casual daily outfit.

Let me know your thoughts on wearing white for fall and winter. Do you love wearing them or do you feel uncomfortable.

Also let me know what all white essentials you already have in your closet and if you want me to create a style guide for them.
