How To Care and Clean Your Espadrilles

Espadrilles are a popular footwear for spring, summer as well as for vacation. They bring the Spanish elegance to all our outfit. And they also look classy. But like everything else, if you don’t take care of these nice espadrilles, then they will eventually not help elevate your style.

In this post, I want to help you take care your cute espadrilles, so they last longer and you can style them confidently with all your chic outfits.

How to Care For Your Espadrilles?

Here are some common questions about taking care of this summer chic footwear.

Can I wash my espadrilles?

Espadrilles are made out of natural fabric, canvas and jute. And some of them are made out of leather and jute. All of these fabrics will easily absorb moisture and can change their composition. In simple terms, if you get them wet, the chances of wear and tear are higher.

So, washing them in washing machines or bucket of water is not the best thing in the world. But you can still clean them using the method I have shared below.

What happens when espadrilles get wet?

If you soak the espadrilles in water for days and then expect them to work as knew, then probably you are buying the wrong footwear. They are made out of natural fibers. But this also means that they won’t peel or completely get damaged if they get wet once in a while.

In fact you should use water to clean the surface, so they stay clean.

How to Clean Your Espadrilles?

Cleaning your espadrilles does not have to be that difficult. I found this shoe cleaning kit from Gold Standards which comes with a cleaning brush and a cleaning solution which makes the process quick and easy.

So let’s see how we can quickly clean our espadrilles.

Step 1

You need to get a clean bowl of water, and dip the brush in it. This way applying the cleaning solution is easier and the product gets absorbed by the espadrille so get cleaned.

But don’t soak the brush in water. That will make it super wet and the solution might not stay or its going to make the espadrilles really wet.

Step 2

Put some cleaning solution in the brush. You don’t need a lot, just put enough that it will create some sud while cleaning the espadrilles.

I just needed half a teaspoon probably and it worked to clean one espadrille exterior and interior.

Step 3

Use the brush to scrub the areas where you want to clean. The brush automatically creates foams, but it’s not as bad as you taking a bubble bath. It’s very little and it immediately gets absorbed by the espadrilles.

And you can also use the brush to clean the canvas surface, you dont need anything else. I do have a lot of foot dirt on the interiors of the espadrilles, and I used the brush to clean that.

Step 4

After you are satisfied with the cleaning, just use a dry cloth to wipe the surface.

This will wipe off any grime that the brush has left and also get some of the moisture out of the espadrilles. Now, I used a towel because they are the best fabric for absorbing moisture, but you can also use microfiber clothes.

Final Result

Here is a comparison of how the cleaning turned out. But honestly, this took me a just a few minutes and my shoes looked so much cleaner.

Ofcourse, I need to wait for the espadrille to dry before I wear it, but these are like my 4 year old espadrilles that I have just cleaned. So I am pretty happy to see them looking so good.

What's In the Product

The cleaning solution is all natural and is also made to clean leather, suede, unbuckle and also nylon along with natural fabric like canvas and jute.

The brush is made out of Hog hair, so its rigid but its still natural fibre, so its not going to damage your shoes. And honestly I was impressed by how fast the brush cleaned my shoes. And I am exited to use this on my white leather shoes next.
