You’ve prepared your answers. You’ve researched the company. You know your worth. And yet somehow, the morning of the interview, you’re standing in front of your closet in a panic because nothing feels quite right and you have 20 minutes to figure it out.

I have spent 20+ years in Corporate, have interviewed, been interviewed countless times and here’s what nobody talks about. Interview outfit stress isn’t really about vanity. It’s about control. When everything else about an interview feels uncertain, your outfit is the one thing you can actually decide in advance.

And when that decision feels unresolved, it leaks into everything else. You walk in distracted. You sit down already second-guessing yourself. And the interview starts before you’re ready. This is also your first and often only chance to make a lasting impression on the Interviewee. And You don’t want to come across as someone who should not be taken seriously.

So if you have a job interview coming up and you’re already stressing about what to wear then this post is for you. Here’s exactly what works, why it works, and how to put it together without the morning panic.

Covered In This Post

What To Wear In A Virtual Interview

The first step after you get through the recruiter screening is interviewing with the hiring manager and in some occasions it could be a peer who is interviewing on behalf of the hiring manager. I have encountered this and also instructed my team to interview first if it’s a highly technical role.

So, the first step is to know whom you are meeting, so you can be mentally prepared. Always make sure you grab a quiet space where you are able to focus on the meeting. It’s really important otherwise, you loose conversation threads and can come across as a not interested in the opportunity.

Also make sure your background is not too loud. Most virtual meeting tools like Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Webex give you an option select a virtual background. Totally take advantage of that. But don’t put a Hawaii beach vacation background unless you are interviewing for a Travel Company. Have a plain background, so you remain the focus of the interview and not the background.

But Lets talk about what to actually wear so your top half that’s visible in the Camera is polished and confident to nail the interview.

Full Sleeve Button Down Shirt

This is my preferred option when I cannot figure out what to wear or don’t know if I will get too hot in the day or chilly. This is the safest option where you immediately look polished and serious about the interview.

Let’s also talk about the color. I would recommend wearing a white button down shirt. But if white feels too formal for the company you are interviewing, you can pick light pink, light blue, or light gray shades that are neutral colors and look great on anyone. This way again, the focus is on what you are discussing in the meeting and not your wardrobe. You also don’t appear too intense to the interviewer and accidentally intimidate them. I have experienced this when I am being interviewed by an Individual Contributor who is potentially Junior than me.

In terms of sleeve length of the shirt, I always recommend wearing full sleeves with sleeves fully buttoned. Not showing your bracelets or watch during the virtual interview. This again keeps the focus on the conversation. And does not create any unnecessary ideas about your status or if you are over qualified for the job.

Also, if you have Tattoos on your arms, then the full sleeve button down shirt will cover it. It’s really really important that you do it. And I know a lot of you will get upset with this. But, your appearance is as much part of the screening process as what you have to offer. Even if Companies claim to be diverse, this goes into the culture part. And you want to ensure you are not getting any negative points.

You can also wear striped full sleeve shirts. These are an excellent variation of the solid colors that look polished and sophisticated. And give the appearance that you have really paid attention to how your dresses for the interview.

Color choices should be neutral again, black and white stripes, or white and navy stripes. A white and pink stripes is also totally fine. But the goal is to keep the base color white or gray or beige that feels neutral and subtle. You look polished and put together and not over the top.

I also recommend no crazy logos or button details on the shirts that feel distracting. And I know I have seen instagram videos where these so called Gurus have shared that guess what my outfit got us into a great conversation and I was hired. That’s a 1 in a million situation. And you don’t know what job they were interviewing for. It could be a Creative Director job in a Fashion house.

Lily Silk Silk Striped Shirt

Polo Collar Full Sleeve Tops

If you are interviewing for a company that has casual dress code or startups, then a Polo Collar full sleeve top is another great alternative. This is where you can get into navy or gray shades for solid colors. And really basic stripes if you want to add pattern.

A top can quickly get and feel really casual, so pay attention to the stripe details so you don’t look like you were walking the dog and then you stepped into the interview. You want to look polished and not laidback.

I love a solid colored Polo top because it looks good without a lot of figuring out whether it looks good or not.

Quince Cashmere Polo Sweater

Stitches & Stripes Polo Top

Collarless Full Sleeve Shirts

These are another great option for the interview. A light blue, white, gray or pink shirt will work perfectly. If you have long hair and you keep it down, then whether you wear a collared shirt or a collarless one, you will look put together in both.

You can also pick striped ones but thin stripes will look more polished than thick stripes. The goal is again to not wear something that feels distracting to the interviewer where they are forgetting what they are asking you. And in turn after the interview, the only thing they are thinking about what you wore and how it was not the right choice.

Ralph Lauren Band Collar Long-Sleeve Shirt

Brooks Brothers Wrinkle Free Shirt

White Crewneck Tshirt + Blazer

If you do want to wear a Tshirt because you don’t own shirts, or don’t have the right ones, then make sure you pair it with a black blazer for a polished look.

You can also pair a gray blazer or a navy one to change up the outfit for a multi-day interview process. But make sure you are not wearing blazers that have gold buttons and look too flashy or nice. As I mentioned, you want to look put together and not fancy so the feedback is on your performance in the interview.

A blazer is the ultimate work wear that will always make you look polished and stylish. And you are taken seriously.

What Not To Wear

  • I would avoid wearing all black. It just feels very intense and if you are someone who has serious personality, the shade magnifies it. And you can come across extremely intimidating. Lighter colors are always preferable.
  • Avoid wearing bold prints that are distracting. They always create a casual look. And you waste way too much time on figuring out the right prints and all that.
  • Avoid wearing bright colors. Stick to the basic. Its not a party and you are there to prove the impact you can bring at work.
  • Avoid flashy earrings or jewelries. The virtual interview is done in a small window which means the focus is narrow and all these small details are easily visible. So, make sure you are not wearing something that gives away a belief or creates a bias mindset for the interviewer.

What To Wear In An In-Person Interview

Your outfit gets trickier if you are going for an in-person interview. Now you have to worry about your entire look so you come across someone who is confident and knows what they are bringing to the table for the company. And not fidgeting with what they are wearing.

These outfits are not about looking the most stylish or nicest in the room, but how you can convey your worth through your overall appearance. And whether you like it or not, how you dress does define your worth at work.

I am not saying you need to wear head to toe designer which will convey that you are really rich. But if you are applying for a senior position and you walk in with a tshirt dress and sneakers, you are definitely not giving the vibe that you can sit in important meetings.

And that’s the whole reason you need to dress the part. And if you are a woman of color, you have to try double harder to do this. So, make sure you are nailing the dress code.

Button Down Shirt + Black Pants + Blazer + Flats

This is the most classic business casual outfit that is perfect for an interview. You look put together and confident with a collared shirt. Black pants are basics and will never draw attention. Add a black blazer or a navy blazer depending on which one you have. And flat close toe ballet flats or Mary Janes.

This basic outfit screams confidence and composure. You will look the part that you have come their as a serious applicant. And your outfit will not be a distraction during the interview.

You can either wear a striped shirt or a solid shirt, but the shade has to be neutral, so it does not feel too playful or cause distraction.

If you are interviewing at a Financial or a Legal company, the typical dress code is business casual. And this dress code is perfect for it.

You can even go for heeled pumps. But make sure you are not wearing stilettos.

Shop The Look

White Crewneck T-shirt + Dark Wash Jeans + Blazer + Flats

If you are interviewing at a Tech company or a startup, going for a smart casual outfit will be more appropriate. If you go with what I shared above it can be too formal and have a negative effect that you are too old or too senior to be employed there. Trust me! I have seen it all.

This outfit is still neutral and polished but its more on the casual side. The white crewneck tshirt looks put together and covers your neckline as well. The dark wash jeans is a polished version of denim that is perfect for office looks. It looks classy but it’s casual too. Just make sure it doesn’t have weird prints or stitches and definitely no rips. I have shared all the office-appropriate dark wash jeans that you can pick one from.

Add a blazer so you can cover your arms and also look put together for an interview. Now you can add black boots to this outfit or just wear flats. Even if you want to wear sneakers, I would still ask you to wear footwear that does not draw attention. Because the interviewer can see the full you.

Handbag To Carry To The Interview

If you are interviewing for a senior position, it’s important that you are carrying a shabby worn out handbag. A simple black work bag will do. There are plenty of budget friendly options. I have a whole blog post where I have shared these classy work totes. Pick a black or tan that’s not too flashy. And no designer logos please.

If you are going for a tech company interview, you can carry your backpack as well for the interview. It’s normal for women to wear backpacks in that style of companies. But again, no branded or designer pieces.

Important tip: If you are going in person, always carry print outs of your resume. It does not matter if its 2026, the interviewer might ask, and it will feel awesome that you are prepared.

Best Accessory For An Interview

A good wrist watch always feels like the best accessory for you. Now I am not saying buy a Rolex. But these are the best pieces that are small talk starters and it’s ok to talk about them. My recommendation pick a silver watch or a leather strap watch. These look polished and work appropriate.

You might be wearing Apple Watch and that’s fine too. But if you are going for a senior role, trust me this is something I love to see and talk about in an interview.

Tissot Quartz Watch

What Not To Wear

  • Unless you are going for a fashion job interview or somewhere dressing nicer is actually key, I would stay away from dresses or skirts. They are unnecessary attention seekers and you are there for an interview. I know a lot of folks will say otherwise, but as a Millennial who has been on both sides of the table, this to me feels unnecessary.
  • No flashy jewelries, keep it to the minimum.
  • Make sure your bra straps are not visible and/or you are wearing padded bra, so your nipples are not showing up under the shirt. I know it’s a trend now, but this will not have a good impressions on the interviewer. You appear unprepared and that’s a direct reflection on how you operate at work.
  • Bright colors is still no here in any form.
  • No designer or big logos please, in your shoes, handbag or sunglasses that you are wearing. Keep everything as minimal as possible.

Makeup, Hair and Personal Care For The Interview

I have to add this because it’s still an important part to being prepared and looking your best for the interview. And something a lot of ladies forget when they are going for an interview.

Makeup: It should be minimal. We are in the age of neutral makeup and that’s the perfect look for an interview. But it does not mean no makeup and show up with a raw face. You need to look presentable. So, make sure you do your normal makeup, but no smokey eye or bright eyeshadows. You also don’t need to wear bright lipstick. An everyday lipstick shade that looks good on your skin tone and you have tried and tested will work.

Hair: Now everyone’s hair is different and your normal everyday look will be something that suits you. So, just go with a put together hairstyle. For me that’s my hair down with light waves. And that’s what I wear to interview. For you it could be a ponytail. The goal is not to do something that you are not comfortable to sit around for a long time. Interviews are stressful and you want to be comfortable being in it.

Personal Care: This is really important if you are going for an in person interview. No chipped nails or weird nail designs, that looks cheap. Just go with pink nail shade or other lighter colors that don’t draw attention.

But more importantly, the part that I have seen many women forget is body odor. Yes this is really important if you are going for an interview. Make sure you are not wearing a strong perfume. Pick a soft fragrance that’s lighter in note.  And if you don’t wear perfume, please make sure you are wearing deodorant. We all sweat in an interview believe it or not. And the worst thing is that your interviewer just hated sitting in the close door with you because of your sweat smell. Unfortunately, that’s a huge reason to get rejected.
