Shirt Jackets have been really popular over the past couple of years and for a good reason. They are comfortable and look way better than Denim jacket. And most importantly, they elevate your everyday casual outfits.
But in this post, I wanted to share how you can make them look a bit more stylish with a few different tricks that I am sure will help you as well. I have been using these styling ideas to add a bit of feminine touch to my Shirt Jacket outfits as well as looking for the right kind of shirt jacket that works for me.
So, let’s get started.
Picking the Right Style
I think this is important for all of us and I wanted to address it here, because sometimes we get carried away by what we see on social media and celebrities. And that affects our buying decision.
Though it is not at all a bad thing (I am literally doing that here too), its important to keep in mind what your style is before you buy any of clothing item.
That will help you to get the most wear out of them and enjoy them to the fullest.
For me, any kind of outerwear piece has to serve two purposes, add more coziness to my outfit specially in fall and winter. And add structure to my complete look again really important for fall and winter where we tend to wear thick clothing that does not provide much of that.
Your outerwear can bring in that structure to your outfit and this will elevate your look.
So, when I am looking for Shirt Jackets, I look for solid colors instead of plaid or patterns, because it easily works with any outfit and naturally looks more sophisticated and luxurious.
So, Pay attention to that.
This year, I picked an army green Shirt Jacket that I also have featured in my Fall Capsule Wardrobe with colors. This jacket looks structured with the button details as well as the belt loop already provided.
Another key point to think of when shopping is size. I typically size up in my outerwear because, I want to wear them with chunky knits, but with this one outerwear piece, I suggest buying the same size as you would normally buy your clothes.
The shirt jacket is designed to have an oversized look and while that is absolutely awesome. Wearing way oversized clothes can make you look frumpy. So pick the right fit of these Shirt Jackets.
Adding a Waist Definition
This is the best way you won’t feel drowned in a shirt jacket. For someone who is more towards the Petite side, oversized clothes literally drown me.
For me, this trick works every time. That is why I actually love this Shirt Jacket from & other stories because it already has a belt that comes with it which you can use.
But if you don’t have a Shirt jacket that way, just use a thick belt. A thicker belt will create an illusion of a narrower waist and in turn will make the jacket flattering on you.
It also helps reduce the oversized look of the jacket. Now don’t even have to wear a layer underneath if you don’t want to and wear a shirt jacket as your top.
Isn’t that amazing. It maximizes your wear out of the jacket.

Proportion Contrast
Its a rule I follow with all my outfits and its a really simple one. You need to always wear something loose or relaxed with something fitted.
In this case, you can pair these oversized shirt jacket with Fitted Jeans or Leggings, both of which are fitted and will elongate your legs as well.
This way you are not drowning in clothes because we want our clothes to flatter us.
If you like to wear skinny jeans, this is a great way to wear them and look effortless chic with the shirt jacket.
You can also wear them with fitted dresses that will add a structured touch and also make you feel comfortable if wearing them is not the best feeling for you. I am on the same boat. Though I love fitted sweater dresses, my body looks boxy in them without any shape. But by adding the shirt jacket, I am creating a dimension to the look.

Show some Skin
If you just want to wear it with something casual like a straight leg jeans or a bohemian dress and feel like you cannot pull it off. Think differently.
All you needs to show a bit of skin. For me wearing this jacket with sneakers allows me to pair them with straight leg jeans as well and they don’t feel as oversized as they are.
I also love them with fit and flare dresses because them I can wear ankle boots and belt the jacket or leave it as is, depending on what my mood is and both ways my outfit looks effortless chic.
Its always important to balance the outfit, if you have too many oversized pieces together, you will not come up with a cohesive outfit. But by showing some skin, you can add a bit of chicness to the look.
I always feel like in winter, when I am covered from head to toe, I end up looking like an Eskimo. But by simply showing my ankles I can get away with wearing this oversized jacket.
