Sweater dresses are my favorite for fall and winter because they are really easy to wear because its just one piece and it looks chic and feminine as well as casual and edgy unlike summer dresses that can only have one look. In this post I am sharing some easy ways you can style different styles of sweater dresses for fall and winter.
While sweater dresses are easy to put together, you can really elevate it with a little bit of styling. That is what this post is all about.
What I am covering in this post:
Over the Knee Sweater Dress
The dress has puff and cuffed sleeves that elevate the simple design and the turtleneck style makes this dress really cozy.
This is one of the most worn sweater dress style. Whether you can find a puff sleeve one or just simple long sleeve. These style of sweaters are mostly thicker knit material so you feel warmer in them. I also love to wear this style of sweater dresses because they definitely look sportier and are perfect for everyday chic casual wear.
But if you have straight figure they can make you look boxy as well. So pick a layering piece that will add some structure to the dress and in turn will create a shape for you. You can also add a belt to the dress, but make sure that its not a thin one because that can make you look bulky. Check out the post where I am sharing how you can pick and style belts with your outfit.
There are 3 easy ways I have styled a tan over the knee sweater which is similar to the one I shared.

The first outfit is actually my favorite because it easily looks stylish without any effort. If you create a monochromatic outfit, it always looks most aesthetic and pleasing to the eyes. In this outfit, I added some black tights to create a division between the boots and the dress which actually makes me look taller.
The second outfit is awesome for running errands, and by wearing a super long coat, I eliminated the need for wearing tights or longer socks. This is also a great way to distract the eyes from looking at the boxiness of this aline dress.
The third outfit is perfect for the holidays where I simply added some red tone accessories and a jacket to bring in the holiday style and you can wear this to any holiday gathering. O picked pattern tights which makes the simple sweater a bit more interesting.
Midi Sweater Dress
This sweater dress is in the season’s best color which you can wear for so many different occasions. Its light weight which makes its perfect to layer on and with the removable waist belt which you can use as a belt when needed.
A midi length sweater dress is another really common style that is way more comfortable to wear because of the comfortable length. You will also find a lot of options for this style, but try to stick to a simple style because you want the dress to be versatile.
I also like to experiment with colors when I am choosing this particular style of sweater dress. because you can easily layer it on make them look like skirts as well. If you have a business casual dress code then this style of sweater dress would be perfect for you.
You can layer it with another sweater or blazers and create a sophisticated and cozy outfit for work. And the options of belting these styles of dresses are also more because you just have more fabric in the dress length to play with.
Below are some of my favorite styles with midi sweater dresses.

In the first outfit I am layering the sweater dress with a cable knit sweater in a contrasting color. This not only makes the look cozier, but interesting as well. because of the simple design of the sweater dress, it might feel a bit boring, but if you layer it with something which has more pattern and style, the outfit looks fresh and more put together.
The yellow sweater dress is my favorite and I have shared another outfit with it as well. This look would be great for work where I have added a tweed blazer that also feels really comfortable and adds some pattern without and color contrast. And tweed blazer always looks classic for some reason. I paired this look with black ankle boots with narrow heels to create a more feminine look. Adding a belt is optional, but in this case it creates a waist definition adds more structure to the over all look.
The last outfit is great for everyday casual wear as well as some dining out where you do not want to dress up a lot but want to look nice. Winter and leather jackets are the best combination and in this look, I also added ankle boots which match the leather jacket with hardware details. This creates an effortless edgy look that makes this simple sweater dress stand out.

Cardigan Sweater Dress
Treasure & Bond Cardigan Sweater Dress
This dress is really comfortable and relaxing. I love all the button details that is not over the top which makes this cardigan dress versatile. But the best part is that its not see through which usually happens with sweater dresses.
This style of sweater dress looks the most stylish and put together. The button details add a personality to the simple sweater dress and the V neck style looks flattering on any body type. And the great part about this is that even though its midi length, it just looks so chic and stylish. And its by far my favorite kind of midi dress for my straight figure.
With the buttons, the sweater dress involuntarily creates a waist definition, something that I really look for specially when I have a rectangular body shape. Also, with the different styles of buttons, you can really create chic and stylish looks. You can layer them on sweaters and transform the dress into skirt. Pair it will open front cardigans which will not make the dress look too casual because it already has buttons.
Moreover, the V neck line creates an illusion of a thinner waistline. This is the reason these styles of cardigan dresses sell out the fastest. If this is your first time trying these styles of cardigan dress, then go for basic colors like black, white, tan or navy. This way you get more wear out of the dress and get used to the button styling as well.
When I am picking a cardigan dress, I make sure that I pick one which is not too form fitting. Even though these styles will look great, but because of the button details, they can look too tight and potentially open if they are too tight, so opt for loose fit one, or go up a size.
Some ways I love wearing cardigan sweater dresses.

The first outfit in the left is perfect for working from home or lounging at home. The contrasting button details makes it really easy to put together. Here I used to layer a contrasting coatigan, but you can also wear a cardigan. If you pick a contrasting color, it just adds some depth to the look since everything else is monochrome. I also chose a black belt but with the gold hardware detail, it elevates the outfit without drawing a lot of attention.
In the second outfit in the middle, I am actually wearing a contrasting tall boot in tan color which matches the tan wool coat. And adding a brown tone thin belt completes this feminine neutral chic look. This way you will stay completely covered and cozy but at the same time with the contrasting footwear, you still create some personality to the simple cardigan dress. I decided not to add some hardware details in the belt so that it does not make the whole look busier with too many things happening to it.
And in my last outfit, I am wearing an all black look from head to toe which look bohemian and edgy. With the contrasting belt and the contrasting bag, the outfit has some pop of color other than black. But this outfit combination is a great way to elongate yourself. If you have a petite frame, a midi dress usually looks way too much because, it covers your entire frame, but going all black in dress elongates your limbs because visually it all looks seamless. This is a great trick I use whenever I want to look taller.
