If you just watched Devil Wears Prada and you are absolutely obsessed with the styling and left with a renewed motivation to dress up again in a nice outfit. Me too friend! If you have a special thought you want to share with the readers leave a comment below. I always read it friend.
Now, I definitely was looking forward to watching the Devil Wears Prada 2 after been a serial repeater of the first movie. As a Millennial, I dreamt of having an office like this where I can strut like Miranda in amazing outfits. 20 years in corporate and honestly I am still searching for that moment. But jokes apart.
There were many moments in the movie that I felt as someone almost outside of fashion industry, I don’t see a lot of similarities. But what struck me was the intro scene of the movie where Andy and her entire team gets laid off from their publishing company, which made me think of the movie as something else. It felt like a career defining moment for me. And I want to share 7 takeaways I got from the movie.
A Signature Outfit Formula Keeps A Bad Work Day Away
From scene 1 till the end you will see Andy (Anne Hathaway) in signature suit styles and they are not just matching suit. She look great in oversized blazers, wide leg trousers and a fitted top. And you will see her repeating this look over and over again in different looks.
So, when she was running around trying to do different things for her job and let’s face it mostly for Miranda, she didn’t have to worry about what she needed to wear.
And a good outfit formula is not the clothes you wear, it’s the combination of clothes that you look and feel the best in. My go to outfit formula for work has been fitted top + wide leg pants + structured jacket. And now I am going to be rocking that in confidence.
Don't Under Estimate The Power Of A Good Hairstyle
Miranda’s (Meryl Streep) signature hairstyle that follows from Devil Wears Prada original movie is something she has stuck with till date. And for a good reason. First off, it’s a hairstyle she looks so powerful and amazing in. I mean Meryl Streep’s jawline looks fabulous in that hair.
But that hairstyle is like 70% of her looks in the movie. You can spot her from a million mile. And she feels the most confident in it. And let’s not forget how much time she must be saving by rocking that hairstyle everyday. She does not need to try new looks. She has perfected that hairstyle for years.
On an average us Women spend so much time on our hair and are never happy how it looks. Why can’t we just have 1 hairstyle and perfect the styling part with practice till we have nailed the look.
I do understand, that in reality, we will get bored eventually with our hair, but the goal is if you found a good hairstyle, there is nothing wrong in repeating it. And Miranda Priestly just gave us her blessing.
You Are Not 25 Anymore - Grow Up
Andrea or as we all love calling her Andy is not dressing up like when she was 25 just walking into the office for the first time. Even after Nigel’s transformation magic. With age her style evolved and as a Senior Editor in the company who gets her own assistant, she needed to look the part too.
So all you amazing powerful ladies who have just gotten a promotion or finally gotten the role you were going after and finally got it. It’s ok to step up your style. You don’t need complete wardrobe refresh so show up as the evolved person.
When Andy starts taking the Runway job seriously in both movies, you see that transformation as well. She looks nicer, takes care of her body as well. Because honestly most of us focus so much on doing a good job that we forget, we deserve it and need to celebrate ourselves as well.
Don't Underestimate The Power Of Colors
From Miranda’s silver hoops and jewelries to Andy’s Navy blazers, you can see how colors can instantly elevate your work wardrobe. You don’t need to wear Neon colors to work, but we also don’t need to be basic and wear black all the time.
I see this everyday at work. Your only color in your wardrobe cannot be a denim jacket please. There are better colors out there. Navy, Burgundy, Chocolate brown and so many other shades that you can rock at work in confidence without feeling like you are wearing too much color.
Adding a color reflects intentionality. You chose to dress up and show up confidently at work and you mean business.
Invest In Work Wear Jewelries
I honestly cannot stop looking at all the amazing jewelries that were shown in Devil Wears Prada movies. But in part 2 you will see Andy wears her signature pearl necklace and rings. Miranda rocking her silver hoops on repeat.
Having go to jewelry pieces for work not only makes getting ready for work significantly easier, it also creates a signature look. And it’s so much better for your wallet too. You are not shopping for jewelries constantly. And you know exactly what works with your outfits.
And surprisingly this is something I have been doing for years. I stopped shopping for fake jewelries all together. And now am proud of what I have.
Be Confident In Who You Are
Miranda and Nigel are epitome of this mantra because they embraced who they are in the entire movie. Nigel even admits that Miranda does not care for his career growth at all. And he is still ok with that which made me a little sad. But he knew he loves fashion and his personality. And he never seized to be that person.
Even when he looked Andy up and down the first time she walked into the office. And while this is just not about style, I want you to hold that thought in terms of your style personality as well. You do not need to force yourself to fit in all the time. Dress basic or boring because you feel that’s what will get you accepted. Because it won’t.
People who judge you will always judge you. And people who love you will never judge.
A Good Monochrome Outfit Never Goes Wrong
From Amara to Andy and even Miranda you would see Monochrome outfits on repeat throughout the movie and why not. It works everytime. You look polished and sophisticated. And this makes getting ready so much easier.
Dressing better is not hard, you just need to do it. And a good monochrome outfit always looks polished and uber stylish. Whether you wear a gray, navy, black outfit, if you wear a monochrome look, it instantly looks so much better.
And you also worry less whether something goes well with something or not. Because it always will.
Let me know in comments what do you think about the movie. And if you like me to share my favorite looks from the movie.
