How to Pick And Style Tulle Skirts With Your Outfits

If you haven’t already noticed this on my blog, then this post will definitely confirm my obsession with Tulle skirts. What can I say, heavily influenced by Carrie Bradshaw from Sex & The City, I love her sense of style where she could easily combine something feminine with something structured and masculine. This can also be summed up as my style.

So, its all too natural for me to go for Tulle skirts that are the most feminine piece of clothing and mix it with some structured and literally wear it everyday. I have a whole collection of Tulle skirts. In this post I wanted to share my tips on how I style them for not just special occasion but also for everyday outfits. While a Tulle skirt looks so chic & feminine, there are so many versatile ways of styling the skirt.

Life Is Too Short to wear Frumpy Clothes! Dress Up!!

Are Tulle Skirts Still In Style?

I wondered about it a lot myself. It does feel a bit too feminine in the age of ripped jeans, slouchy jeans and loungewear. And for someone who wears all of the above, I needed to make sure that I am not wearing dated clothes.

Before we can get to that, I just wanted to share a small history lesson of the tulle skirts or tulle in general. Sorry, am a history nerd! Tulle was first made as a form of lace in 1700s to be used in garments, but the fabric got patented as Tulle in 1809 and was made to be added to Evening gowns, wedding gowns and lingerie.

While, that was the primary intent of the fabric, designers all over the world have added their spin to the fabric. In 2020 itself, I saw them in major fashion runways from brands like Valentino, Dior, Dolce Gabanna & so on. So, the answer is NO. I still see so many brands like Ted Baker, Kate Spade, even Gap coming up with their versions of the fabric.

Now, the fabric is also used in dresses, I recently bought one from H&M for fall which I shared in my H&M Fall winter favorites in this post, I am focusing on Tulle Skirts, because they are one of the most versatile piece of clothing and I think every woman should own at least 1 of them.

How Do You Wear A Tulle Skirt Casually or Look Edgy?

The Easy Guide to Casual Look with Tulle skirt

There are so many ways you can create more of a casual or even edgy look with a Tulle skirt. But the key is to find a tulle skirt that fits your style. If yo don’t want to look more dressed up with Tulle skirts, you should look for skirts with fewer layers of tulle. The skirt would less layers would appear to look like a regular pleated skirt.

You can also pick tulle skirts that have patterns in them or even printed tulle fabric skirts. They still look feminine, but these skirts generally have fewer layers of tulle so that the pattern or print is standing out compared to the tulle.

I have also noticed that going for midi skirts makes the outfit casual compared to going for above the knee skirts that tend to look fancier. And you can also add casual clothing pieces with the tulle skirt to tone it down.

The same way you can also create an edgy look with biker jackets, or even a leather shirt jacket and boots.

The same way you can also create an edgy look with biker jackets, or even a leather shirt jacket and boots. Combat boots are an excellent way of creating an edgy look because of the hardware details.

You can also pick darker tone of the Tulle skirt, to look less feminine. They often pass for a pleated skirt. With a darker tulle skirt you can also use white boots that look chic as well as edgy. You don’t have to go full grungy look. You can create a style that looks classic and elegant as well.

Can You Wear a Tulle Skirt To Work?

Yes you can, in fact if you have more of a business formal dress code, then it is even easier to pull off a Tulle skirt outfit. You need to make sure again, that the skirt does not have  multiple layers of tulle fabric. A single layer tulle fabric in more of a everyday colors like blue, mauve, green, or even tan would look perfect for work. I have a Tulle skirt with polka dots in it, that completely passes off as just a regular pleated skirt.

If you have a business casual dress code at work, you can layer it with long oversized blazers or shirt jackets to create more of a casual style, or even add a long trench coat to tone down the tulle style. I love adding tall boots to the outfit, this way the texture of the boots make the outfit look more casual and not fancy.

For your footwear, I love adding loafers instead of pumps when I wear a tulle skirt, if I want to create a formal look, but not too dressed. Pumps usually create a dressier outfit in my opinion.

How Do You Wear A Tulle Skirt Without Looking Fat?

It is natural to look a little bulky with tulle skirts. They are naturally made to add more density to a woman’s hips. And that is purely why I love it. I am more a straight figured, so for me, wearing a tulle skirt creates a curvier shape to my body.

But if you are still worried about looking fat in them, then try to add a narrower or pointy footwear. It elongates your legs and makes them look leaner.

If It looks good on you, you should wear it, that's the only rule I follow!

I also love to add a belt to my waist that makes my waist look smaller. The outfit rule that I tend to always follow with most of my looks, is to pair something fitted with something loose, this way you are balancing the overall proportion of your outfit.

If I am wearing a layered tulle skirt, I would wear a fitted top, but if I am wearing a not so pouffy skirt, I will wear it with an oversize cropped sweater, It also creates a more relaxed look don’t you think.

How To Look Chic In a Tulle Skirt But Not like a Ballerina?

How not to Overdo the Tulle skirt outfit

Ballerinas are known to wear tulle skirts and why not, they look so divine. But in our everyday lives, we mayn’t want to look like a ballerina walking around everywhere.

Even though I love tulle skirt, I dont like to dress too fancy in it. It just feels a bit too much. So, I do what Carrie Bradshaw would do, mix it up.

I add some Gold jewelry to give my outfit a bohemian touch. Wear an oversized sunglass, or even add blazers that look structured and not too fancy. I tend to stay away from fancier top when wearing a tulle skirt since it feels a bit too much. Instead, I prefer shirts or simple tops that balance out the tulle.

I think I just said too many tulles, Hahaha.

Best Shops to Buy Tulle Skirts from!

You don’t have to spend a $1000 dollars on them just to create a perfect outfit, but I would also caution you from buying them from Amazon. Any tulle skirt that is too cheap would actually show because of the nature of the fabric. So, when shopping for them fro Amazon, look at the price point. Anything above $40 would be a good choice.

But my absolute go to is Chicwish and most of my tulle skirts are from there. The price point is just perfect and they usually have good sales promotions going most of the year. They also have a wide collection of tulle skirts in different styles that will fit anyones personal style.

I also love shopping for them on Asos which also is a more budget friendly shop where you can get wedding tulle skirts and everyday ones as well. They not only have Tulle skirts, but a variety of other casual pieces. So if you love Casual style, you should check the store.

I am not sure if you already love tulle skirts and are rocking them, in that case, please share your top tips. I am always looking for ways to improve the way I style them. And Happy New year, my lovelies.
