Before We Begin
There are a few things that I absolutely want you to take out of your mind. These are probably outdated thoughts and in 2021 we don’t have time for them.
- There is no such thing as Dressing Appropriately for your Age. There used to be a time when you cant wear certain things in your teens, 20s, 30s, and so on. But in this current age of style, when you see Gen Zs rocking mid part like anything, I completely ditched that idea. Ofcourse, there are still things that just does not feel right at a certain age and it makes you feel frumpy. Check out my post about it below.
- Just because you are in your 30s, you do not have to dress up boring so that people will take you seriously. This is a corporate culture that I live in as well where it seems that in order to show people that we are serious about our job, we have to dress like we don’t care. If you don’t care about yourself, how will you care about what you contribute.
Now that I have gotten that out the door, let’s get started.
How To Dress Nice Everyday
Invest in Tailored Pieces
I cannot stress this enough. Tailored pieces naturally look more sophisticated and structured. So, even if you don’t have the time to put in the effort to look good, they naturally add that to your style.
If you are starting with this, invest in a good button down shirt, a good white or a black button down shirt will absolutely change your whole look. You can also invest in tailored pants and they don’t have to be suits.
You can absolutely wear nice relaxed fit pants that are comfortable. This spring I bought a pair of pull on structured pants and I cannot tell you how much I wear them. They instantly make me look more stylish and out together.
Relaxed Fit Instead of Skin Tight
Its high time that you skip to really skin tight clothes and start wearing more relaxed fit style which elevates your look and flatters you more. This is valid even if you have a killer body. Go skip the skinny jeans and go for straight leg or wide leg jeans that look way more flattering and stylish.
It is a very wrong myth that wearing figure hugging clothes are the only way to look good. Figure hugging clothes have a way of showing all your imperfections. The moment I realized that, I started exploring clothing pieces that actually flatter my body and enhance my figure instead of trying to fit into a mold.
Invest in Clothes other Than Workwear
Since we spend the most amount of time at work, we often only shop for that. Now I am not saying build a brand new wardrobe that you can wear outside of work. Rather invest in pieces that you can wear at work and outside of it. And definitely shop for a few pieces that you can wear outside of work.
This way you will start building a distinct style of yours with pieces that you truly enjoy which in turn will become your personal style. You will also find clothes that you truly enjoy wearing and looks great on you.
Dress for The Occasion
I say this always, but its really important if you want to feel good about the way you are dressing up for any occasion. Dressing appropriately for any occasion shows that you have a great style sense about it and makes you look more confident.
But what does this exactly mean. The rule is simple, if the event is casual don’t wear a cocktail dress and if the event is formal or dressed up avoid wearing athleisure.
Dressing appropriately also means paying attention to your accessories and makeup to ensure that you balancing all of that with the outfit you are wearing.
Invest in an Elevated Handbag
Its time to ditch that frumpy large crossbody bag and get a more structured one that looks more sophisticated and compliments your outfits.
When it comes to handbags, I totally avoid trendy pieces. Go for classic structured styles like a medium top handle crossbody bag for dressed up events. And a small crossbody bag or a tote bag for running errands.
You don’t have tp buy designer pair at all. Go for a good quality piece, mostly leather and stick with solid color instead of snake print or Multi colored. This way you can wear it with so many of your outfits.
Invest in Statement Sunglasses
Sunglasses are like an everyday essential for most of us. Invest in a pair of good one that flatters your face and elevates your style. Honestly, I cannot live without sunglasses and a good pair always adds that extra touch to my style.
Its time to ditch those amazon ones, and get a good pair of Raybans that look high quality and are stylish too. If they are too expensive, checkout Quay, Kate Spade, Tory Burch who also have some really high quality pair but in a good budget.
Skip Activewear when Going Out
Maybe its still cool to wear athleisure, but I honestly don’t think they flatter us at all. It really does not matter whether you are wearing leggings or joggers. Athleisure has actually gotten a bad reputation because of this.
When the style was introduced, it was more towards creating relaxed outfits that you can wear and feel comfortable with relaxed trousers, sneakers, casual relaxed T shirts.
So, if you want to look sporty when outside, switch to more structured joggers instead of jersey ones that look more elevated and stylish. Express has some great pairs that they specially designed for work which you can absolutely rock when running errands.
Skip your running shoes and wear a good pair of everyday sneakers. Instead of going for athletic brands choose the ones that specialize in walking shoes like Superga, Soludos, Veja. These sneakers are more elevated and look good with everyday clothes.
If you choose to wear leggings go for Spanx. They are the best athleisure leggings that are faux leather so they elevate your style and look more sophisticated.
Experiment with Colors
Adding a pop of color is the best way to elevate any outfit. This instantly makes you look more put together and sophisticated. You don’t have to wear bright colors if you don’t like them, but adding a bit of a color palette in your wardrobe is an excellent way of creating your statement style and making your everyday outfits look even better.
If you are interested, I have so many style guides about them. My favorite color combos are monochromatic outfits that effortlessly look good always.

Wear Gold Jewelry
Adding a bit of Gold Jewelry to your outfit will absolutely elevate it. No doubt about it. It immediately makes your look luxurious and elevated. You don’t have to buy real gold jewelry if you don’t want to. You can get really good quality jewelry that are fashion jewelry even from Amazon and still make it look good.
This is when it might go wrong, don’t over do it. If you like statement earrings, probably skip statement necklace. And the other way around. This is the minimal rule will make you look effortlessly stylish.
You can do an exception if you have like a really dressed up event where you need to wear more jewelry.
Upgrade your Flats
Its time to update your ballerina flats to something more structured and stylish that will add that sophistication to your outfit.
I love wearing loafers and loafer mules that look so chic and stylish with jeans. And they actually elevate my casual outfits.
Leather Slides or Flat Espadrilles are also great footwear alternatives that honestly look more stylish and sophisticated. These shoes are not only comfortable, but they are also elevated because of the structured details and you do not even have to spend a lot of money for them. Steve Madden, Soludos, Vince Camuto and so many other brands in this price point have excellent shoes that look really nice.
