Why Summer Dressing Is Harder Than It Looks
Here’s the thing nobody tells you: summer is actually the hardest season to dress well in. Less fabric means fewer places to hide. Heat rules out half your go-to pieces. And most summer shopping feels exciting in the store and useless the morning after.
Real women like you and I are looking for clothes that they can feel comfortable in and also feel confident in. And not just look like the instagram influencers who are dressing just for the camera.
In this post, I am sharing xx summer wardrobes basics that are not just basics, but pieces that will actually elevate your style everyday.
These basics are pieces that will help you be ready for any activity in summer easily without making around to the store for a last minute purchase. Because we all know where those pieces pile up after the 1 wear.
What Makes a Piece a True Summer Essential?
You can say, Suchi anything I wear on repeat is an essential for me. And yes I would agree. But the goal is to have basics that will help you look stylish easily and not something to cover your body.
We can wear a rag and call it basic honestly, that does not help us look stylish. Here are some of my guidelines in recommending summer basics for you:
- Breathable fabrics: Summer is hot weather, and you can’t wear fabrics that’s going to make it worse for you.
- It works for more than one occasion: A true summer essential is truly versatile Beach to brunch, desk to dinner, errand to event. The goal is you can really wear it multiple times.
- It pairs with at least 3 other pieces you already own: If you can’t style it with what you already own, you will end up buying more clothes just to wear one. That totally defeats it being an essential.
- It’s a timeless piece: Which means you can actually wear it next summer. That’s the whole goal here right, a closet we can enjoy every year.
- It elevates your style: Its not something that makes you look good.
- It fits well on you: This has to be important, fit is an important reason why women don’t look good in a piece of clothing.
Summer Wardrobe Essentials That Actually Work
Linen Button Down Shirt
Button down shirts don’t get as much credit as they should. They make anyone look good. And in the hot weather, linen shirts are absolutely essential for your wardrobe. From office to date night, these shirts can easily elevate your looks. And honestly make getting ready easier.
You can have one full sleeve linen shirt which is perfect for professional looks. And a short sleeve linen shirt for all your everyday looks.
And if you want to take it further pick striped linen shirts, they will add more details to even a basic look.
Wear them with all your summer bottoms, or even use them as a light layer over sleeveless clothes. Or throw them over your swimwear as a swim cover up.
Crewneck T-shirt
Stop buying V neck t-shirts. You need to try a crewneck t-shirt to know how instantly you look chic and stylish. But a good quality one is really important. No films fabric that looks cheap. Its ok if you are picking a jersey or fitted one, lets just make sure its not see through.
A crewneck t-shirt will become your life saver when it comes to looking polished and put together in a rush. Whether you are working from home, or you are headed to somewhere in a rush, these always come in handy.
You can pair them with any bottom and create and elevated look.
In terms of color, a white and a black is a must have, but you should also have a navy which is perfect black version for summer.
Checkout some elevated outfit ideas with white crew neck tee you can try right now.
Structured Sleeveless Top
Summer is all about baring your arms. We all are sick of wearing full sleeve and we want to feel comfortable in the heat. So our ultimate essential for any bottom becomes a sleeveless top.
But instead of your basic tank tops or a camisole, pick a sleeveless top that’s structured and will make your outfit look better.
Buttoned sleeveless tops look instantly more polished and elevated. They still have the structured detail, but they also look sophisticated than a basic tank top.
Vest tops or just buttoned sleeveless tops are perfect basics that you can look polished in.
Structured Slip Dress
Slip dresses are a no brainer wardrobe essentials for summer. They are so easy to throw in and you can easily accessorize them with anything. But instead of a boring Tshirt jersey dress that hugs you all in the wrong places.
Or a camisole silk dress that honestly is very hard to style without an outer layer, pick a structured slip dress. They can still be sleeveless, so you can wear then easily by themselves on hot days. But also can layer them when you are indoors. These dresses look polished and sophisticated. My best basic summer dresses are two-tone dresses, that still are easy to slip on but don’t look boring like a t-shirt dress.
The two tone design makes the dress interesting even if they just are a plain color. And if the dress is in fit and flared silhouette, that looks great on all of us.
I have been repeating this dress all summer for the past 3 years. Its so comfortable and high quality.
Structured Linen Pants
Linen pants are no brainer summer basics. The linen fabric keeps you cool in the heat. And they also give you that summer chic look. But instead of the basic pull on linen pants which you might already own pick one that’s structured.
The pull on style are good for your loungewear, but these linen pants have front opening and give you a polished look. They are still comfortable and breathable in the hot weather, but they won’t make you look frumpy.
You can wear then with cute tops and create chic outfits for special occasions. Or you can also wear them to work in summer. They are super versatile and wardrobe must have in the hot weather.
And you don’t need so many colors, just pick an ecru (off white) and one black. And you can wear them with all your tops.
Tailored Shorts
Shorts are a must have for summer weather and we all reach out for the most when the temperatures sore. I love wearing structured shorts, they are the best summer basics to create chic shorts summer outfits effortlessly.
The tailored details will make your outfit look more put together and classy even if you are just wearing a tank top or shirt with them. Whether you are headed to a summer vacation destination, or running errands, these summer staples will become and essential bottom that you will reach for every time you want to wear shorts with your outfit.
I always pay attention to the fit of these tailored shorts. I don’t want them to hug my body. I want them to be relaxed and look like that. This makes them a versatile bottom you can pair with any tops. Also, they will be much more comfortable. No one wants them to be be hugging and people can see you sweating through them.
White Jeans
Summer is the perfect time to rock some white jeans because they instantly make your outfit look luxe and summer chic.
Summer is the season of something bright and light. And white jeans add that summer vibe to all your denim looks. I love rocking white jeans when I can wear shorts or skirts. Specially if you are headed to work, or you haven’t shaved your legs.
These are an awesome alternative to denim shade of jeans that just look boring.
After trying and wasting money on 100s of white jeans, I can tell you as a grown women, the key to finding good white jeans is:
- Make sure they are not see through. The denim needs to be good quality.
- They are not super tight, most of the time you might be ticking stuff in and you want your jeans to be breathable.
- No super stretchy ones because they will be low quality.
Silk Slip Skirt
If you have a feminine style, you own one of these for sure. Slip skirts have made a major come back since 2024 and I am here for it. I own a couple of these since 2014. They are a wardrobe staple and perfect skirts to wear in the summer. They are lightweight, but look structured.
If you don’t own one or have outgrown the one you have, pick an ankle length slip skirt that shoes some skin but also looks elegant and chic. Pick a silk skirt that is breathable in the hot weather than satin fabric.
And you can pick a basic shade like black or navy that you can wear with all your tops. This way you can easily create versatile looks from day to night with your outfit.
Cotton Poplin Maxi Skirt
As the temperatures sore, you will want to wear some breathable bottoms than just pants. A cotton maxi skirt is the perfect basic skirt that you can throw on and pair with any top.
I recommended maxi skirt because they look chic and polished over midi skirts that make you look petite. Also these maxi skirts are really versatile. You just need one that you can pair with all the cute tops of even structured tops like shirts to create classy and elevated summer outfits.
They look chic yet really comfortable and an awesome way to dress up in the hot weather. These have become a wardrobe staple for me over the years.
Light Structured Jacket
Jackets are also important summer basics because even if you feel like you don’t need them, you will. Specially staying indoors and night time. But you can’t wear your cold weather jackets. And a denim jacket does not elevate your outfit.
Pick a structured collared jacket in a versatile shade that you can wear with any outfit. This will easily make your outfit polished when you need that third layer.
Trench jackets or just collared lightweight jackets are perfect summer essentials that you can wear if you are traveling, to work and for everyday as well. And they will also elevate your outfit. That’s the goal, to have pieces that you can throw on and look nice easily.
Flat Leather Slides
Flat slides are a must have for summer weather. What’s not to like about them. They are comfortable and make your feet happy. But instead of going for Birkenstocks pick leather flat slides.
These are not only comfortable, but they also will elevate even your basic casual summer looks. They are easy to wear but the leather material makes them and elevated basic.
And they go with everything in your wardrobe from jeans outfits to dresses. You can literally wear them with anything. Pick the right shade and style and they look stylish and elevated.
Comfortable Block Heels
I know you hate heels, but you don’t need 4 inch heels. You only need an inch or 2 inch heels and the perfect style to wear them in are block heels. These are really comfortable.
But why heels? Because heels do make your outfit more stylish. So when you do want to look put together and polished, heels will easily do that to your outfit. That is the reason you still see women wearing them. But you don’t have to be uncomfortable in them.
All you need is a pair of black or neutral shade depending on when you like to wear them and that’s it. I have found that 2 inch heel height is perfect for me. I look stylish but also am comfortable to walk in for a long time.
How to Use These Essentials Together
A simple way to wear these pieces are wearing them with your favorite summer pieces. But here is a style rule that I always follow with every outfit that I am building that helps me look put together in minutes.
1 Structured piece + 1 Relaxed piece + 1 Elevated piece
Now your outfit does not have to be just 3 pieces, but 1 of each of these categories will make you feel confident in what you are wearing.
What to Skip This Summer
I can go on and on, but here are some common pieces that I encourage you to avoid if you want to look stylish this summer:
- Shredded jeans shorts
- High low tops
- Loud logo tops
- Biker shorts for shorts
- See through tees
- Bad Fit pants
- Shirts that are too tight
