How to Update Your Skinny Jeans Looks

Wondering how to change your skinny jeans outfits this year, in this post I am sharing some easy ways you can look stylish in them and keep on enjoying skinny jeans whether its cold weather or hot weather.

You will find what outerwear, what tops and how to elevate your outfits when wearing skinny jeans.

What to Wear with Skinny Jeans

You keep hearing skinny jeans are dead but you also know that they are the easiest to style when it comes to winter as they go very well with boots. So, what do you do? In this post I am sharing some easy ways you can upgrade your skinny jeans look for winter and still rock them in confidence.

As a Millennial I know exactly how you feel. We literally grew up with skinny jeans. So, lets continue to wear them but there are some ways you can update your looks to feel like you are still in sync with the current style and don’t look OUTDATED.

Let’s see how.

Adding an Updated Outerwear

Outerwear is a key layer for any winter outfit because it is the last piece that we add to our look. It also has the power to make or break our outfits. And they can easily update your skinny jeans look as well.

This will not only make you look stylish but at the same time compliment your skinny jeans.

Some of the new outerwear styles that look amazing with skinny jeans are:

Wearing with Shirt Jacket

I have honestly fell in love with these and they are great replacement to denim jackets that have now become super basic and most likely outdated. Because of the oversized structure of the jacket they compliment skinny jeans very well which are really fitted for us. This way your entire outfit looks cohesive and effortlessly stylish. And the collar details of the jacket adds a sophistication to your outfit even though you are going for a casual look.

Wearing with Leather Puffer Coats

These have been reinvented and this year I have seen so many structured puffer coats, that look elevated and at the sometime super cozy and makes it really easy for us to wear them with skinny jeans. If you are not a fan of puffer coats, you can still open for a puffer jackets like faux leather puffer jackets or belted puffer jackets that look modern and will still keep you cozy.

Wearing with Oversized Blazer

This is a great outerwear piece for Spring time when you don’t need a thick layering piece. And because of the oversized style, it will balance out the slim silhouette of the jeans.

I always feel more comfortable when I am wearing something relaxed fit with my skinny jeans.

Wearing with Oversized Coats

These style of coats are not really structured like double breasted coats and because of this they look more effortless chic and create the much coveted street style look that we see in all magazines. I personally find these styles of coat versatile much more wearable and they are a newer style of coat compared to the Pee Coats and buttoned double breasted coats that look outdated.

Create a Monochromatic Look

You know how much I love monochromatic looks and this is for a good reason. They look way more put together without a lot of effort. This is a great way to dress when you really cannot find what to wear, but this style will also elevate your skinny jeans outfit.

You might have see so many monochromatic outfit inspiration on Pinterest, sharing my board that I created as well. The reason here is simple, when you wear a lot of clothing items in similar color or shade, eyes would naturally be drawn to the color and how your outfit looks overall rather than focusing on skinny jeans itself.

I have a blog post where I share how you can create monochromatic outfits in winter which will help you in practicing to build monochromatic outfits.

Since in winter most of us prefer dark wash or black jeans, its so easy to pair similar color top or knitwear and outerwear and create a monochromatic look. You can also match the color of the jeans and create a monochrome look which is an easier way to style as well. You can use this trick to wear white skinny jeans as well. I just find white color in general more refreshing in the gloomy winter weather.

If this still feels a bit too much, you can always create an all black or all white outfit that is always effortless chic but actually does not take any effort. Checkout this video where I share how you can create winter white outfits without looking washed out or just plain.

Update Your Sweater Style

Changing or picking sweaters that would elevate your skinny jeans is also an easy way to update your overall outfit without having to sacrifice on wearing skinny jeans.

There are a couple of style of sweaters that look amazing with skinny jeans which also includes some new ones that I found this year or you can say this winter which will add a fun element to your outfit without sacrificing your personal style.

Wearing Oversized Sweaters

These will naturally look more flattering with skinny jeans, but I always prefer the ones that I am able to front tuck instead of it just hanging on me. This way your outfit looks more put together and you also show your skinny jeans style that I find really flattering.

Wearing Zip Up Sweaters

This is a new style that we have seen this winter and I am absolutely obsessed because they look so elevated with the collar detail. And because most of these sweaters have really wide collars, they give the appearance of oversized style without the fit of the sweater being that way. And this helps draw attention to the sweater which updates your look.

Wearing Chunky Cardigans

This is not really a new style of sweaters but I have seen them a lot lately and these are one of my favorite winter knitwear. The V Neck detail along with the buttons creates this chic yet casual style that looks great on any body type. These also look amazing with skinny jeans because of the oversized style of the cardigan and the chunky knit details.

Wearing Oversized Blouse

This is a great spring alternative where you can pair your skinny jeans with an oversized button down shirt or blouse that compliments the skinny silhouette of the jeans. This is basically the rule to follow with skinny jeans if you want to create an elevated yet effortless look that we see everywhere.

Wear an Updated Footwear

When it comes to winter we all love wearing boots, but there are other footwear that you can wear with skinny jeans along with boots that look chic and elevated. And these would also be great for spring season.

But let’s talk about some updated styles of footwear and some pre existing footwear that you might already own which will look great with skinny and will help you update your look this winter and spring.

Wearing Lug Sole Boots

Whether you pick tall or ankle boots, the lug sole boots look awesome with skinny jeans just like they look great with leggings. Tall lug sole boots will work great when you are wearing short jackets and want to balance proportions of your overall outfit. But they also look great with longer coat. This year I have see so many different styles of lug sole boots that are stylish and will elevate your outfit instead of making them look frumpy. If you are wearing oversized sweater or a structured coat then you can wear ankle length lug sole boots which will compliment your outfit nicely.

Wearing Combat Boots

The lace details of the combat boots elevate the simple design of these boots and are a great pair for skinny jeans. Skinny jeans can look a bit basic and boring but wearing combat boots with them will add some detail to your legs and will elevate your overall outfit.

Wearing Loafers

Whether you wear loafers or loafer mules, these footwear will look compliment skinny jeans very well. This is because of the stitching and hardware details on the shoe. They also look really luxurious even though you have not spend as much money on them. And they create an oversize proportion to the skinny ankle style of the jeans and will elevate your outfit.

Wearing with Slingbacks

These are a great alternative to pumps that look great with skinny jeans and are a much preferred footwear if you are heading to work or have a party and want to wear jeans. Sling backs look much more modern and are really comfortable as well. I personally prefer the ones that have block heels which make even more comfortable but you can also find kitten heel sling backs. These will create a feminine and structured skinny jeans outfit that also looks modern.

Accessorize Your Skinny Jeans

If you don’t want to do a whole lot of shopping but still want to update your skinny jeans outfit then this is the best tip. You can use winter accessories that you already own or find really in expensive versions of and style your outfits with them.

Belts are my favorite accessory that always elevates any outfit and they wore great in this case as well. There are some ways you can use belts with skinny jeans.

  1. You can belt your skinny jeans with a belt that has more hardware detail like a logo. And this way you can get away with wearing a fitted top with your skinny jeans as well. The trick is to actually use thicker belt. This is really important if you have a straight figure because a thick belt will create a waist definition. Want to know more about how to belts? Checkout this post where I share how you can incorporate them in your daily outfits.
  2. You can wear your belt on top of the outerwear you are wearing. This works great on blazers, cardigans or Coats that are structured. This tricks creates a sophisticated and put together outfit that will draw attention to the belt itself than the skinny jeans.

You can also wear wool scarfs that have patterns along with your regular outfits. I prefer the thicker wool scarfs rather than the knit scarfs that look outdated. There are plenty of brands like Madewell, Banana Republic, JCrew that have really good quality scarves in budget friendly option. This a great way to create an oversized silhouette without wearing oversized clothes that will balance the really fitted skinny jeans.

I also love wearing hats like Felt hats, beanies or other styles of hats that will accessorize my look and elevate it so my skinny jeans outfit does not look plain and boring. I personally love wearing felt fedora hats that look so chic and add a different personality to my skinny jeans outfit.

Do's and Don'ts for Updating Your Skinny Jeans

I also have some Do’s and Donts in terms of what style of skinny jeans you should be wearing to create and updated look. More importantly what jeans you should also be avoiding so you don’t look outdated at all.

Don'ts

  • Avoid wearing extremely ripped skinny jeans. These are really outdated and look very immature. And if you want to look classy and sophisticated, avoid wearing any extreme ripped style of skinny jeans. Ofcourse, you can still rock one rip or raw hem style of skinny jeans that are much more elevated versions of the ripped jeans trend.
  • NO Jeggings Please! These are jeans that I really never understood the purpose of. They don’t fit properly at all and with all the faux pockets and faux front closure they look extremely cheap. Instead you can find really affordable jeans at target, old navy or Macys which look amazing and fit well as well. If you want your jeans to be really fitted, then you can find some great quality pieces from Madewell which masters these super fitted skinny jeans and I am wearing a black colored one myself. Loft also has some great stretchy fit skinny jeans that are under $100.

Do's

  • Wear relaxed fit skinny jeans which look modern and are comfortable to wear as well. These jeans would normally have button front closure and will have slight flare at the ankle which looks really flattering and creates an effortless look.
  • Wear ankle length skinny jeans which looks much more put together and tailored compared to jeans that curl up around your ankle. The ankle length jeans also makes it easy for you to wear ankle boots without folding the jeans a lot or worrying about the jeans getting stuck in the boots while walking and looking weird. You can find some budget friendly options in Levis, Express, Loft, Ann Taylor where they have different length options available.
